When was the last time you had space to think?
I've realised that some of my best thinking doesn't happen when I'm sitting at my desk. It usually happens when I'm out walking Bailey.
No music. No podcasts. No phone calls. Just fresh air, nature and a bit of space to think. I'll often head out with my mind full of everything that needs doing and come back with a completely different perspective or a solution that hadn't occurred to me before.
When was the last time you had space to think?
Not to answer emails, deal with admin or rush from one meeting to the next. I mean genuine thinking time. The kind of uninterrupted space where you can step back, reflect on where your business – or life – is heading, and make decisions without feeling like you're constantly reacting.
Some of the people I work with are incredibly successful. Their businesses are growing and opportunities are coming in. From the outside, everything looks like it's going brilliantly but behind the scenes, they're constantly switching between priorities. By the end of the day, they've achieved a huge amount, yet they still feel like they've spent the whole day responding to everyone else's agenda.
I've realised that one of the biggest things good support creates isn't just more time. It creates thinking space. Space to look ahead instead of constantly looking at today's to-do list. Space to make better decisions, spot opportunities that might otherwise be missed, and have the mental capacity to focus on the things that only you can do.
Perhaps that's why I value those walks with Bailey so much. They remind me that thinking isn't a luxury or time away from work.
Sometimes it's the most valuable work we do.
